Knights Templar & Hospitaller in London
in Medieval & Tudor London

The Templar Church, London (it no longer has the conical hat) - © Nash Ford PublishingIn medieval & Tudor times, there were lots of monasteries within and immediately surrounding the walls of the City of London. Two of them belonged to the monastic knights who helped pilgrims. They were both eventually shut down.
  • The Priory of St. John of Jerusalem at Clerkenwell was the home of Knights Hospitaller in London and also of their Grand Prior. He was in charge of all the Hospitallers in England. They originally had a round church. They ran a large hostel for travellers. It had to be rebuilt after it was burnt down during the Peasants' Revolt. Only St. John's Gate and the church crypt survive today. Stone from here was used to build Old Somerset House.
  • The Temple Church was the church of the Knights Templar. These were mysterious fighting monks who protected pilgrims. Their church is round. It is the only remaining building from their monastery. The order was shut down in the 14th century. The buildings were rented out as a hostel for lawyers. They eventually became two of the Inns of Court (legal colleges): the Inner Temple & the Middle Temple.
